1) massive squeal-y thanks to
fairy_tale_echo for the box of chocolates on my user info page! WHEE!
2) i wasnt kidding about needing ideas for discussion questions based on Serenity for the film discussion night.
thoughts are currently based around
-belief and love
-if non firefly fans can follow whats going on, AND whether it has more of an impact if you are a firefly fan
-government control vs independence
any thoughts? at all? please?

Whew, sorry, didn't mean to get on the box there. I just love this soundtrack.

Date: 2006-02-17 07:29 am (UTC)Joss Whedon is a master of creating characters.
So, my suggestion? Characterization.
Possible questions:
Do you think you got to know the characters well enough to care whether they lived or died? (For the non FF fans. Or, maybe we should call them the NEW FF fans.)
Which character(s) did you have the strongest reaction(s) to? Why do you think that is?
Are these the type of people you would willingly depend on to save the universe? Why, why not?
What is the appeal of morally ambiguous characters? Why do we want our criminals to have hearts of gold?
How far would you be willing to go to stop an atrocity against the people?
How much do the people around us, and the situations we live through, change us? How is this reflected in the movie? (The second may be better for FF fans, as we have more backstory than the NEW FF fans will.)
Each person on Serenity has three faces -- how they see themselves, how others see them, and who they become when all hell breaks loose and they have to step up and be BDHs.
How many faces do we have? Do you think there are certain types of situations that force us to drop all pretenses and bring forth our real selves?
What do you think of cowboys in space?
Science Fiction: better with aliens, or without?
Do you think that type of future is possible?
Mal Reynolds or Han Solo? (Sorry. That one is just silly.)
Yeah, my discussion group would probably take a few silly turns. Make sure you have cookies. Lots and lot sof cookies. (Fortune cookies!)
Good luck. Be sure to report back on the evening -- I'd be interested in hearing how many people ask about the series. :)
(NEW FF fans!)
