Fic Is My Gateway Drug

So, i have been thinking about fandom. All fandom really, and wondering how people originally started in it, and how far down into fandom insanity they have gotten.

im not so much talking about stalking the celebrities of shows and giving them things *cough*goldenradishes*cough*, but more about fic, i guess.

for example, i started out in Roswell. (yes, i know you know, stop rolling your eyes). i got online, i think for the first time at the Crashdown, and wandered my way into fic.

I read things. i enjoyed. i didnt dare click on anything above a PG13 rating.

i blushed through minor sex scenes. now, this could be because i was still a virgin at that point, but i doubt that, as i had already seen porn by that point, and we approaching TMI for you? sorry..

anyway, sex scenes made me blush and the slightest amount of slashiness sent me running for the hills. cause *boys* kissing *boys* left me in nervous giggles.

at some point, all that changed, and im trying to figure out when i went from that innocent 18 year old who blushed and skipped sex scenes to the 25 year old who reads George/Fred Weasley twincest and Dom/Billy Real Person Fic.

Is it like pot, the gateway drug?

you get involved in G rated het fic, with some little kisses.

sure thats great! but it leads to PG fic, with groping over clothes.

then to PG13, with implied sex!

then to R! and now we are removing clothes and describing some body parts.

and now we have hit the NC17 limit, and we are reading hard core porn, and smoking after a good fic.

and thats only het. and het NC17 leads to slash, with kissing and boyrubbing and really really hot porn that you cant tell youre husband about because you are reading GAYPORN and what happened to the little girl who blushed and giggled?!

and its just all downhill.

so, to sum up.

G rated fic is the gateway drug to the more hard core fics.

now, i think i might be able to find some Boone/Shannon incest fic. or maybe i will go reread that really really hot Orlijah fic i found a while ago..its a first time boyporn fic, and its hot like a hot thing.

OMG, it so is the gateway drug. I remember the first time I ventured into the NC-17 section of fic on Crashdown. I was blushing like crazy and only reading when no one else was around to possibly see. Hee. Now I read so much smut it's not even funny.

*snerk* I can remember when 20 year old me and 20 year old Em wouldn't accept anything over R at RU because we were squicked by sex scenes.

And 26 year old me who's reading about Hogwarts students going at it with their profs, while my fiance reads some of my less hardcore stuff in the form of Ats: No Limits (it's not porn, that'll be on the DVD extras). And we're not gonna talk about the time he walked in on me reading Harry/twincest. But that wasn't even a good story...

Amen, my sister. Amen. Except that I'm still drawing the line at rps and boybandslash. Really. You and Kim in my Arthurian Lit class will not draw me into the dark side. (thought I know someone who knows someone who wrote NSync slash set in ancient Greece)

see, ive always ALWAYS ALWAYS drawn the line at RPS fic, cause real people fic is all kinds of squick..but, ive fallen for Dom in Lost, and now i cant get away from the dirty dirty Dom/Billy stuff out there..*weeps* there are some good intro fics over at minionsficrecs...*beckons you to the dark side of fandom*

see? that's the difference between us, i think ... I started right in on the NC-17 fics because, dammit! I was curious! But, I will concede that I only read them at night when everyone else in the house had gone to bed because I was terrified at being caught.

Then, I was so paranoid that I would go in and erase the history so that my mom wouldn't find out I had been reading smut. Lol! As far as I know, she never found out. And if she did, she never said anything to me about it. Thank God I finally bought my own computer for my room.

The slash came about the same time. (I, too, started out on Crashdown.com) It was before I really got into the characters, both loves and hatreds, so I had no problem shipping Michael and Max and I ended up reading some of that. Too squicky for me now, just because I'm WAY too emotionally involved with Michael to ship him with anyone but Maria. But, I won't get into that, because you know my issues. ;)

And the RPS!! AGH! I told you, you just have to erase the links and quit cold turkey! *cough* Okay, okay. I feel the need to confess ... after you came down for your sister's party and told me you had started reading Billy/Dom, I went looking for RPS again to see how I felt about it now. And you now have me reading OrliRPS, you bitch! *sigh*

I'd curse at you some more for getting me re-addicted, but I have an all night shoot tonight and tomorrow night and must ready myself. Tootles, babe!
